Kate Austen:
OUTSIDE
Katherine Austen was born on 1977, in rural Iowa. Her mother, Diane Janssen, became pregnant with Kate by a man named Wayne. However, Kate grew up believing that her kind step dad, Sam Austen, was her biological father. Eventually, Diane returned to Wayne, despite his physical abusiveness. Wayne, an alcoholic, made repeated advances towards Kate, who was still unaware of his "true" identity.
One day, while making a photo album of all Sam’s war pictures, a date caught Kate’s eye. A picture showing Sam at war, was dated nine months before Kate was born, indicating Sam's absence at the time of her conception. Kate's shock, at learning that the man she despised was her real father, soon turned to disgust that he was ruining both her mother's and her own life. Wayne arrived home drunk one night, and attempted to make a pass at Kate. Filled with anger, Kate tolerated this last advance, then blew up the house with Wayne inside. Rather than turn herself in, Kate decided to become a fugitive, but she went to see her mother first. At the diner where Diane worked, Kate handed her confused mother a homeowner's insurance policy to assure her a good living, then fled. Diane was traumatized to learn that her daughter had killed the man she loved, and reported Kate to the authorities.
Kate's first escape, came when Marshall Edward Mars caught up to her in a bus station. As he drove her in, a black horse ran in front of his car and forced them off the road. Kate ran from the scene of the accident, and left a wounded Mars behind.
Forced to live a life on the run, Kate was constantly hunted by the determined Mars. Later, She learned that Diane developed cancer, and was hospitalized. Kate sought the help of her childhood sweetheart, Tom Brennan, a Doctor at Diane's hospital. As they waited for a window of opportunity, the pair dug up a time capsule they had buried as children. That night Kate snuck into the hospital to comfort her mother, however, at seeing Kate, Diane started to scream for help, forcing Kate to escape again. With guards everywhere, Kate asked Tom for his car keys, but he insisted on helping her and got in the car. As they sped away from hospital, they soon had an accident. Fearing police attention, Kate escaped the scene in tears, leaving Tom for dead.
On the run, Kate assumed name Monica and relocated to Florida, where she married a police officer, named Kevin Callis. In on of her frequent calls to the Marshal, Kate begged him to stop chasing her. Mars countered that escaping had become a part of Kate's nature, and promised her to let her go if she could promise to stop running. Unable to keep up her charade, Kate soon proved him right. She confessed the truth about her self to Kevin after drugging him, and escaped again.
Later, in an attempt to lure her in, Mars used one of their conversations to inform Kate that he possessed of an item from Tom's time capsule; the toy airplane, which he left in a safety deposit box in a New Mexico bank. Despite the strong risk of getting caught, Kate traveled to New Mexico, where she posed as Monica to a man named Jason, affiliated with a group of bank robbers. Conning Jason and his gang into teaming with her, Kate then planed a robbery of the bank where the toy airplane was located. In the events of the robbery, Kate, who posed as an innocent photographer, under the alias of Mrs. Ryan, turned on her accomplices, shooting Jason in the leg, as well as shooting the other robbers who tried to intervene, to save the life of a bank employee whom Jason was about to kill. She then obtained the bank key to the deposit box, which held the last item she had from Tom.
Kate then fled to Australia, where she boarded with a man named Ray Mullen for 4 months, working on his farm, until the widowed farmer noticed Kate's wanted poster at the post office. Deeply behind on his mortgage, Mullen decided to contact the police, and obtain the reward of $23,000. To enable her arrest, Mullen convinced Kate to stay an extra night, promising to drive her to the bus station in the morning. On their ride the next day they were tailed by Mars, but Kate saw him, and crashed the vehicle. Once the truck came to a rest, it caught fire. Despite discovering his intentions, Kate decided to save Mullen's life before escaping and pulled him out of the car to safety. As a result of the delay, Mars caught up with Kate and made his arrest. Together they boarded Oceanic Flight 815 back to the states, where Kate sat handcuffed, in seat 27H, until the crash.
SEASON ONE
Kate is the only known survivor who to remember every aspect of Oceanic Flight 815. She told Jack that she saw everything, but did not look back as the tail broke off. Upon crashing on the Island, Kate appeared quite shaken. She wandered into the jungle and cames across Jack, who was badly wounded. He asked if she would stitch him up, and she replied that she only had experience with a sewing machine. However, she sewed up the wound admirably, while Jack recited his "Count to 5" story, and this act of bravery caused Jack and Kate to form a close bond.
She accompanied him, alongside Charlie, on the quest to find the plane's transceiver in the cockpit section of the plane (found in the jungle), in the hope of finding rescue. During the expedition, Jack went missing after the monster attacked the pilot. Terrified, Kate used Jacks "Count to 5" story to overcome her fear, and went back to look for Jack.
Once they got the transceiver Kate formed part of the group - including Sayid, Shannon, Boone, Sawyer and Charlie - which hiked up one of the Island's steep cliffs, to find ground high enough to get a signal, in an attempt to broadcast a distress call. During this time Kate confidently disarmed Sawyer after he shot the polar bear, however once Kate had the gun, she pretended not to know how to use it and enlisted Sayid's help to remove the ammo chamber. Once the they reached higher ground, Kate listened to Rousseau's chilling distress signal.
Even though they did not succeed in sending a distress signal of their own, Sayid built an antenna, so he could locate the source of the distress signal. While hunting for some boar meat with Locke and Michael, Kate climbed a tree with ease and tried to attach the antenna to it. Moments later, the mysterious "Monster” made its familiar sound. Kate dropped the antenna, which fell and crashed on the ground. Kate brought it back to Sayid, who shows for the first time a sign of frustration.
A few days later, Kate kissed Sawyer so he would tell her where he had taken Shannon's asthma medication. After their lip lock, the con man revealed to Kate that he didn't even have the medication, prompting Kate to slap Sawyer across his face.
After Ethan kidnapped Charlie and Claire, Kate, Jack, Locke and Boone went after them. The four castaways split into two groups: Boone & Locke and Kate & Jack. While Locke and Boone did not find anything relevant, Kate and Jack found Charlie, hanged by his neck, probably by Ethan. Kate believed they arrived too late, but Jack did not give up. Eventually, after pounding on his chest several times, Jack brought Charlie back to life, in one of the most emotionally charged scenes of the program.
While gathering fruits in the Jungle, Kate and Sawyer discovered an inland pond with a waterfall, and decided to take a swim. At the bottom of the pond, Kate discovered a Halliburton case that belonged to the deceased Marshal. Seeing that it was important to her, Sawyer confiscated the case for himself. However, after several failed attempts at opening it, Kate managed to steal it back. With Jack's help, Kate dug up the marshal's body to retreive the key from his pocket and together they opened the case. Inside was Tom's plane, and the marshal's spare handguns.
When a boar started attacking him without provocation, Kate decided to help the hapless Sawyer track the beast, in return for Carte Blanche from his stash. That night, the two of them played "I Never", and revealed dark secrets to each other. She mentioned killing a man, and her marriage to Kevin, claiming that it did not last long. Kate constantly appealed to Sawyer's reason, saying that the boar was "Just a boar". They eventually found the boar, and Sawyer decided not to kill it, echoing Kate's sentiments. It was just a boar.
Several days later, Boone was hurt badly and brought to the caves by Locke, who said Boone fell from a cliff. Kate tried to help Jack with the surgery, but he sent her to fetch alchohol from Sawyer instead. On her return trip, Kate happened upon Claire going into labor in the a jungle clearing. Relaying messages via Jin and Charlie, Jack instructed Kate on how to deliver a baby. Kate succeeded, and Claire had a healthy baby.
When Michael began constructing the raft, Kate tried to squeeze herself a spot on it, realizing that it was her only chance to escape the police if they were rescued. Sawyer, who did not intend to give up his spot, revealed to everyone that Kate was the criminal that had been escorted by the Marshal. Kate was not there when the raft set sail and instead went with a group to the Black Rock on a mission for dynamite to blow open the hatch. When the group found the Black Rock, Kate decided she wanted to transport the highly dangerous dynamite. However Jack was against this and it was decided (by longest straw) that Locke and Kate would carry the dynamite, but Jack, in an effort to protect Kate, put the dynamite in his bag instead.
SEASON TWO
After the hatch door was blown off, Kate defied Jack's warnings by working with Locke to get down into the Swan. Almost halfway, she dropped her flashlight, and was plunged into total darkness. As she attempted to calm herself, using Jack's count to 5, she started to hear voices from below. Realizing that someone was down there, Kate screamed up to Locke, but before he could help her, she disappeared in a flash of blue light.
When Locke descended to find her, he was confronted by Desmond, who held Kate at gun point. Locke convinced Desmond that Kate was the most dangerous of the two, so Desmond locked her in the pantry, unwittingly giving her a chance to escape through the ventilation system. When she came down to the computer room again, Desmond was then holding at gun point both Locke and Jack, who had followed to save her. Kate intervened, by hitting Desmond from behind. However, this resulted in Desmond shooting the Swan's computer by mistake. In a fit of panic, Kate is sent by Locke and Jack to fetch Sayid to repair the broken terminal.
Later, Kate attempted to comfort Sun over losing her wedding ring. When Sun revealed that she had hidden the bottle of letters from the raft, Kate became upset and started to read all the letters inside the bottle, looking for one from Sawyer. When stopped by Sun, she confessed that she had feelings for him, and expressed remorse over missing the chance to say goodbye before he left. Together, they find the ring in the hole Sun dug for the bottle.
When the tallies arrive at the camp, along with those from the raft, Jack takes the injured Sawyer into the swan, where he operated on his wound, after which Kate then started attending to Sawyer. One morning, while collecting fruit in the jungle, a black horse appeared to Kate, that looked eerily similar to the horse that appeared to intervene with her first arrest by Mars.
At the swan, a puzzled Kate continued to attend to Sawyer, who was in a fever. The unconscious Swayer suddenly asked Kate why she killed him, in a manner that was reminiscent to Wayne's. Kate, now traumatized, fled the Swan, heading for the Jungle. When Jack went after her, she attempted to evade him by acting mean, before suddenly kissing him. She appeared mortified by her action, strongly apologized to Jack, and ran away, leaving him frozen in shock.
At Shannon's grave, Kate was met by Sayid, to whom she expressed her concerns about going insane. When she confided in him her vision of the horse, Sayid talked to her of his similar experience with the vision of Walt he saw with Shannon before her death, and eventually Kate's worries abated. Kate returned to the Swan and approached Sawyer, who appeared to be still unconscious. Speaking as if he were Wayne, she revealed that she had killed him because she loathed the idea of him being her father, with a part of him in her, in spite of all the harm he brought to her life, adding that her feelings for Sawyer reminded her somehow of Wayne. Sawyer then awoke, he had heard the whole monologue, and joked that he was flattered by it. In spite of her embarrassment, Kate was relieved.
After Claire began having flashes of memory from the two weeks she was held prisoner by Ethan, Kate joined her to find Rousseau, whom Claire recalled attacking her during that time. The trio continued their journey to the place Rousseau had found Claire, and nearby they discovered the Staff. Inside, Claire and Danielle searched for a vaccine for Aaron, while Kate found several lockers, containing the others' trashy costumes, and a fake beard. On their return, Kate talks to Jack of this revelation, which led the survivors to suspect that the Others were not what they seemed to be.
Jack then chose Kate to come with him to "the line", where he planned to force a trade with the Others, Ben for Walt. During their walk, Kate picked up a baby doll, triggering a net in which both were caught. Eventually, Jack shot the rope, to let them out of an temporarily intimate situation.
They camped at the line, after Jack shouted repeatedly for the Others to show up, which they ignored. As night fell, the two made a bonfire. Kate again said that she was sorry for kissing him. However, Jack replied that he was not. Suddenly, an exhausted Michael showed up and fainted, and Kate and Jack carried him back to the Swan.
Unaware of Michael's traitorous intentions to help the Others, Kate agreed to join in the squad he suggested to retrieve Walt. During their trek, Kate and Sawyer spotted two of the Others that were following them. They killed one of them, while the other ran away. Kate was ready to give chase, but Jack stopped her. In a confrontation with Michael, Jack then revealed Michaels actual intentions. However, Jack advised continuing on the mission, assuring them that he had a plan.
Upon arriving to the Capsule Dump, the 5 castaways were captured by the Others. They were taken to Pala Ferry, where Ben gave Walt back to Michael, along with a boat to use in escaping the Island. As they both left, Hurley was set free and sent back to camp with orders for the survivors not to attempt a rescue. Kate, Jack, and Sawyer were then hooded and drugged, to be taken as prisoners to one of the Others' bases.
SEASON THREE
Kate awoke to find herself inside a locker room with a bandage on her arm, and Tom watching her. She was allowed to shower, afterward finding that her cloths had been burned. In their place, a sundress was given to her. Once dressed, she was taken by Tom to have breakfast with Ben, who told her that the next two weeks were going to be very unpleasant. Kate was then thrown into a cage opposite of Sawyer.
The next day, both of them were forced to work at a rock quarry. Sawyer, who was watching her the whole time, walked towards her and kissed her. The Others tried to punish Sawyer with a taser, but he surprised them by fighting back. Sawyer was finally subdued after Juliet pointed a gun at Kate, and threatened to shoot. After they were thrown back to their cages, Sawyer revealed that he had made such an apparently stupid move to test the strength of their enemies.
Soon after, Kate discovered that she could climb out of her cage through the top bars. Sawyer told her to run away and not bother saving him, saying it's "Every man for himself." Instead she climbed back into her cage, quoting Jack, "Live together, die alone," demonstrating that she would stick with him.
Kate did not understand why Sawyer suddenly gave up on escaping, not knowing that Ben had threatened her life should he try again.
Juliet forced Kate to try and convince Jack to perform surgery on Ben, when Pickett threatened to kill Sawyer. Jack refused to listen to her, however, and dismissed her from his presence. Overwhelmed at the thought of losing Sawyer, who revealed her they are not on their island but on a different one, Kate ended up having sex with him in his cage, admitting she loved him. Pickett and Jason came to shoot the con man the next morning. Fortunately, Pickett was interrupted by Tom, who ordered Pickett to hand the walkie-talkie to Kate. On the other side of the walkie Jack was holding Ben hostage and ordered her to take Sawyer and run, not knowing they were on a different island. Kate argued with Jack, who told her she only had an hour before the Others came after her and Sawyer. When they reached safety, he told her to call back on the radio and tell him the story he told her on their first day on the island. Kate was reluctant, but Jack shouted at her to run.
