Charlie Pace
OUTSIDE
Charlie was a devout Catholic, and served as an altar boy in a church. He was given a piano by his mother for Christmas one year, as his parents could see that he had special musical talents.
When he was old enough, Charlie and his brother Liam formed the band DriveShaft, writing the music for it on his piano. DriveShaft quickly became a one hit wonder band, and the pressure of stardom consumed Liam, who turned to heroin. Charlie opposed this, although the stress of being in DriveShaft eventually got to him too, and he also tried some heroin, to which he formed an addiction. When Liam's daughter, Megan, was born, Charlie came to get the addicted father to go see his child. Karen, Liam's wife, was alone in the hospital.
Because of Liam, DriveShaft's lead singer, the band began to lose its magic. They even tried to earn some money by advertising Butties Diapers, with their new version for the hit song "You All Everybody", which became "You All Every Butties". This attempt failed because of Liam.
Back at his apartment, Charlie showed Liam their last chance to bring their band back to life - and song he wrote, called "Saved". Although Liam liked it, and believes they can do it, he could not resist to heroin. Liam had sold Charlie's piano for money to get a ticket to Australia. There was a rehabilitation clinic there where he could turn around, because his wife was threatening to leave him if he didn't. With Liam gone, DriveShaft ceased to exist.
Sometime after Liam's departure, Charlie's drug dealer, Tommy, suggested that he enter a relationship with Lucy Heatherton, the daughter of a wealthy corporation owner, so he could steal from her to pay for his drugs. He did so, but his feelings for her prevented him from betraying her. Lucy broke up with him, however, when she discovered Charlie's original intentions.
Years after DriveShaft's fall, Charlie flew to Sydney to try and convinced Liam, who was now living happily with his wife and children, to reform the band. Liam refused and instead, offered to house Charlie while he attempted to end his drug addiction. Charlie scoffed at this and bought himself a plane ticket for seat 29C aboard Oceanic Flight 815.
The night before the flight, a woman named Lily spent a night with him, pretending to be a big fan of Driveshaft, just so she could get her fix. The next morning, the two of them fought over the last of the heroin, which Charlie had been holding out on. She left his room after their quick struggle, and called him "pathetic".
On the plane, Charlie ran away from Cindy Chandler, a flight attendant, while searching for a suitable empty bathroom. Upon entering and locking the door, he snorted some heroin from a bag stashed in his shoe. He tossed the rest of his drugs into the toilet. Almost directly after this, the plane proceeded to lose turbulence. Charlie quickly got himself into a seat at the front of the plane's mid-section and buckled up.
SEASON ONE
Charlie's intentional thought after the crash subsided was his need for a fix. Therefore, he imposed himself on Jack to go with him and Kate to recover the transceiver from the front end of the plane. While Jack and Kate were busy looking in the ruined the pilot's cabin, Charlie was in the bathroom recovering his heroin stash (Pilot, Part 1). After the transceiver had been fixed, Kate gathered a band of survivors, including Charlie. Together they climbed up one of the Island's steep cliffs, where they were able to listen to Rousseau's distress call. During the hike, the group was attacked by a polar bear, whom Sawyer killed. (Pilot, Part 2)
John Locke helped Charlie to kick his addiction by trading him his drugs for his guitar. Locke told Charlie that he could ask for his heroin three times and the last time, Locke would give it back to him. John held to his promise, and when Charlie had his drugs again, he threw them in the fire, beginning a painful journey of withdrawal. On the same day, Charlie argued with Jack in the caves, and caused one of the caves to collapse, trapping Jack inside. Charlie decided to crawl in to save Jack, and so he did. (The Moth)
Charlie became friends with Claire, a pregnant survivor around his age. He decided to take care of her, and help her with whatever she needs. When half of the survivors moved to the caves, Charlie moved with them, while Claire stayed at the beach. He convinced Claire to move to the caves by bringing her pretend peanut butter; they seemed to be striking up a close relationship.
After Claire was mysteriously attacked two nights in a row, Ethan Rom, an Other, kidnapped Charlie and her (Raised by Another). Ethan hanged Charlie in the jungle by his neck, and left him to die. It seemed too late when Kate and Jack found his body in the jungle, but eventually, Jack was able to revive him. (All the Best Cowboys Have Daddy Issues)
Charlie stopped talking, and distanced himself from the other survivors. Rose helped Charlie to come to terms with Claire's kidnapping, after she told him she believed her husband was still alive, even though he was at the tail section when the plane broke apart in the mid-air. (Whatever the Case May Be)
As Locke and Boone were returning from a day of digging, Claire suddenly appeared, having no recollection of the events after the crash, nor of her friendship with Charlie. He did not tell her what happened to her, or why everybody is starring at her with fear and suspense. Claire eventually found out, with the help of Shannon. With Claire as willing bait, the survivors captured Ethan, and decided to take him captive and interrogate him. Their plan failed when a vengeful Charlie fired six rounds into his chest, killing him. (Homecoming)
Hurley was afraid that Charlie was suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and consulted with Sayid, a former solider, how he could help Charlie. Sayid decided to check up on Charlie, and told him that "what happened with Ethan will be with you for the rest of your life", and that Charlie is not alone - he should not pretend to be. (Outlaws)
Not too long after, Claire went into labour and gave birth to a healthy baby boy, whom she named Aaron (Do No Harm). A couple of days after, Danielle Rousseau, a French woman who was stranded on the island for 16 years showed up. Her daughter, Alex, was taken away from her by the Others. She came to the survivors' camp to warn them that the Others are coming to the boy. (Exodus: Part 1)
When nobody was around, she attacked Claire and stole her baby, hoping to exchange him for her missing daughter. Charlie and Sayid went after her, after Charlie promised Claire he will bring Aaron back. During their chase, Charlie was hurt by one of Danielle's traps. At one point, they stopped by another plane that crashed on the island. Sayid revealed to Charlie that there were Virgin Mary Statues containing heroin inside the plane. At night, they finally caught up to her, and rescued Aaron. Charlie told Danielle "you're pathetic," just as Lily had said to him. Charlie went back to the craft to grab a statue for himself once they got back the baby. Charlie and Sayid then returned to the caves, and Charlie handed Aaron back to a delighted Claire. (Exodus: Part 2)
SEASON TWO
During the next days, Charlie took care of Aaron as much as he could. He castigated Claire for waking the baby up for no reason, and kept a sharp eye whenever Locke was around them.
After the Hatch was opened, and the Swan was discovered, a large amount of food was found inside. Charlie, who remembered how much Claire loves peanut butter, tried to convince Hurley to slip him one. After giving Hurley a hard time about the food, Charlie obtained a jar of peanut butter for his girl. After learning from Claire that Charlie possessed a Virgin Mary Statue in his tent, Mr. Eko forced Charlie to lead him to the plane where they found the bodies of Yemi, Goldie, and Olu. Eko set the plane on fire, but Charlie had previously taken 6 of the statuettes and hidden them. Claire was disgusted that a druggy had been taking care of her baby, and kicked him out of her area. As Charlie struggled with his forced isolation, he had surreal dreams about having to save Aaron. Pulling further back into a hole, he revisited the only friend he had at that point - his heroin. Locke, who knew about the other statues, took them and put them in the gun vault of The Swan. Convinced that he had to baptize the baby, Charlie started a fire at the camp to create a diversion so he could grab Aaron and go down to the water. Claire spotted him, however, and tried to convince him that he is hurting her, instead of helping. Charlie handed the baby to Claire and Locke punched Charlie out.
Sawyer, with the help of Charlie, gained possession of the heroin when he pulled a long con on all of the survivors to get the contents of the gun vault. Charlie claimed that only reason he helped Sawyer is to make Locke feel stupid. Charlie then stole the statues from Sawyer and threw them in the ocean, sealing the kicking of his addiction.
It seemed like Charlie's new "mentor" is Sayid. Charlie helped him in building a dining room, when Ana-Lucia interrupted, and told Sayid that the prisoner in the Hatch drew a map to his balloon - a proof that he is not one of "Them". The three of them went to the other side of the island, where they finally found the balloon. Along the way, Charlie showed grudge towards Ana-Lucia, and even made the comment that last time she held a gun she murdered someone.
Charlie also helped Eko to build a church on the beach, but was angry when Eko decided to discontinue the project. Charlie tried to build the church by himself, but failed to do so. Even so, he assisted Eko in obtaining and rigging dynamite in the hatch when John activated the Lockdown procedure to keep Eko from pushing the button.
As the fuse was lit, Charlie attempted to run out, but the dynamite detonated with a huge explosion. Charlie regained consciousness outside the door and managed to escape, but he returned to camp partially deaf. Charlie and Claire's relationship began to taken a turn for the better when he gave Claire a vaccine case he had found in the hatch. After examining a wound on Charlie's arm from the incident in The Swan, Claire kissed him.
SEASON THREE
When Locke went mute after returning to camp, Charlie stood watch outside his sweat lodge for him. He then went with Locke in search of Eko, who was dragged into a polar bear cave. On the way their, they found that the hatch had imploded. Locke managed to rescue Eko and he and Charlie took him back to the beach.
When Desmond told Claire to move down the beach so he could fix her roof, Charlie said not to worry about it. Being turned down, Desmond constructed a "lightning rod" with a golf club at its top near her tent. A rainstorm soon began to fall, breaking Claire's roof. Just then, lighting struck the rod. Charlie first looked around in shock, but then stared confused at Desmond.
