Sun Kwon:
outside
Sun-Hwa Paik was born in South Korea to her parents Mr. and Mrs. Paik. As a little girl, Sun accidentally broke a glass ballerina, but when confronted with it by her father, blamed it on the maid. Her lying assumedly caused the firing of the maid, and seemed to reflect Sun's willingness to protect herself at all costs.
Her father, a rich businessman, arranged for her to meet a wealthy man named Jae Lee through his wife. After initially liking him, Sun was put off when she realized Jae was purely using her to satisfy his parents, when in reality his heart belonged to another. On her way home, after leaving Jae in a restaurant, Sun bumped into her future husband, Jin.
Sun and Jin were given permission to marry by Mr. Paik, under the condition that Jin would work for his father in law's company. However, Jin's job soon began to create problems within their marriage and Sun felt the relationship was failing.
Jin spent most of his time working long hours, so they started talking less and less. One, after work, Jin comes in with blood all over his hands and shirt. Sun inquires into how he got the blood on his shirt, and she has to tug on him to get a response.
Sun at Jae's hotel. He responds saying that he does what he has to for he father. This is when Sun first began to distrust Jin, thus creating more turmoil in an already failing marriage.
Their marriage was placed under further strain when the couple found that they were having trouble conceiving. They sought the advice of a fertility doctor, who told them that Sun is unable to have a child; however, Dr. Kim later reveals to Sun that it's really Jin who is infertile.
Sun then decides that she is going to leave Jin and go to America. Taking secret English lessons from Jae Lee, she soon becomes fluent without Jin even knowing. During their lessons, Sun starts an affair with Jae Lee, but decides she can't continue the lie one morning in bed at a hotel room, after being presented with a pearl necklace by Jae (which she refuses). At that moment, Sun's father walks into the room to find his daughter sleeping with another man.
Paik later orders Jin to "take care of" Jae, under the tense that he has for some reason "shamed the family". Whilst oblivious to the situation between Jae and Sun, Jin badly beats the man due to a sense of loyalty to Mr. Paik, but cannot kill him. Instead, Jae is told to disappear, but is then seen falling from the hotel room, landing on Jin's car clutching the pearl necklace. Sun soon finds out and is present at his funeral. She is found by her father, and asks him if he would ever tell Jin about her affair. Mr. Paik tells her that it is not his business to do so.
Sun is later told by Jin that they are traveling to Sydney and Los Angeles on vacation, however he is actually on a mission for her father to deliver Rolex watches. With the help of the decorator, Sun plans to leave Jin forever at Sydney airport, disappearing to start a new life.
However, a moment of tenderness from Jin, while they wait in the check-in line at the airport, reminds Sun of her love for her husband. She decides at the final moment not to escape, and says nothing as her planned rendez-vous time with the decorator elapses.
SEASON ONE
After the crash, Jin initially suppresses Sun, as he feels it is his job to protect the two of them from the other survivors. Over time Sun begins to assert herself, and becomes a very important contributor in the lives of the survivors.
Sun's knowledge of herbal medicine, made from plants and wildlife found throughout the island, is proving very valuable in a number of instances. Sun's remedy saves Shannon's life when she has asthma attacks. Sun starts a vegetable Garden, along with Kate, containing some of the herbs that she finds useful for curing common ailments. She is proving to be an able medical assistant to Jack too and recommends the use of sea urchin quills to pierce Jack's skin in order to transfuse his blood into Boone.
Sun is a voice of calm and reason when other survivors appear to go too far; however, she is not without her own mistakes. As she steps in to stop the fighting between Jin and Michael, her knowledge of English suddenly becomes exposed to everyone. When Jin discovers that she has been keeping her English a secret, viewing it as a betrayal, he refuses to speak to her.
On Kate's advice, the day before the second raft is scheduled to leave the Island, Sun poisons Jin's water. Michael drinks the water instead and becomes ill, creating even more turmoil between the survivors. Only Jack and Kate learn that Sun is responsible for the poisoning.
Prior to Jin's departure on the raft, he and Sun reconcile after she gives him a notebook that, in Korean, phonetically spells out many English words to make his communication with Michael and Sawyer easier. Sun takes Jin's departure hard, and remains preoccupied until they return.
SEASON TWO
When Claire finds the bottle from the raft, she shows it to Shannon. In turn, they decide to show it to Sun because she has a loved one on the raft. Sun feels reluctant for anyone else to know about the bottle, so she buries it. Later Sun realizes that she has lost her wedding ring and rips up Garden, while frantically searching for it. She tells Kate about the bottle, and with Kate's help, she finds her ring where she buried the bottle. When Jin returns with the Tailies he and Sun are fully reconciled.
Sun is attacked by Charlie while tending her garden, a part of a plan by Sawyer. Jin becomes overprotective, sparking an argument, and Jin rips up her garden.
Sun determines she is pregnant using a pregnancy test Sawyer had. Sun and Jin reconcile and she confides to Jin that it is he who is infertile, but swears to him that she has not been with another man.
In Live Together, Die Alone, Sun and Jin accompany Sayid on the sailboat ride to the Door camp. On the way they spot the Four-toed statue.
SEASON THREE
In The Glass Ballerina, Sun, Jin, and Sayid set a trap at the Pala Ferry, and Sun is confronted by Colleen, who tells Sun that the Others are not the enemy and that Sun is not a killer. Nevertheless, Sun shoots Colleen, mortally wounding her, and then falls out of the sailboat and into the ocean when Tom fires two shots at her. Jin carries Sun back to shore, and the Others sail away in their stolen boat.
